Goal

For project checkoffs, we want to get a sense of two big things:

• How far along they are in the project/how good their understanding of the project is
• General course feedback

The format of these checkoffs should be casual — see this as an opportunity to get to know what your student is struggling with in this course and what they need help on.

As you are going through the checkoff, use this form as a way of taking notes. You'll need to submit this form for each of the students you check off for them to get credit.

One final note: These are not office hours. We're going to make it as clear as possible that if their questions aren't short or directly related to the content being discussed, they should come to OH instead.

You'll want to have a good understanding of the project spec (below) to ask these questions or have a dialogue with your student.

Guiding questions

• What Part of the project are you on?

  • Note: You should expect your student to come into the checkoff with some work completed. If they have not started, consider asking:
    • What are some questions you have coming into this project?
    • Is there anything going on we should know about that might keep you from finishing this project on time?

• Conceptual understanding: For these questions, guide them to the right answer if they're off-track. If they get stuck, give them some leading thoughts, but not the whole answer. Give them some time to remember things they've learned in lecture and otherwise.

  • Run rails routes in your Whales terminal — can you interpret what you have so far for me?
  • Open schema.rb — can you tell me what's going on here?

• (1-5 rating) How would you gauge your understanding of what you've completed so far in this project?

  • Follow-up: What are the most confusing concepts for you at this point?

• What have you learned from this project so far?

• Ask 1-2 of these, you don't have to ask all of them:

  • If they've completed Part 1: Why did we have to specify optional: true for our belongs_to :trainer relationship?
  • If they've completed Part 2: What is the role of Devise in this project?
  • If they've completed Part 4: What does running rails db:seed do?
